David Popplewell was convicted at Meerut, India for insubordination by striking a superior officer, Sgt. Wooten of 32nd Regiment. 14 yr sentence. Transported from Calcutta to Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), arriving 07/04/1848. A soldier in the 32nd Regiment, 8mths. 3yrs in the 62nd. Previous charge of drunkeness. Single man; native place of birth - near Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England; aged 22yrs; labourer; 5/8"; Protestant; can read & write; fresh complexion; brown hair; brown eyes. 14mths Probation at Cascades (south Hobart) 44 days gained by extra work Assignments in Colony: New Town, Browns River, Hobart, Bothwell, Picton, Longford, 25/07/1854: Ticket of Leave, revoked twice, restored 1860.
