Catherine Porteous, 19 yrs, single, can read, an Out Worker, convicted of theft, sentenced to 10 yrs at Edinburgh on the 11 Jan 1848. Also, once previously convicted of theft. Prison Registers and Statistical Returns - page 177 1843-1850 HO 24/12




Prestonpans is in East Lothian Scotland. Catherine previously convicted for stealing and theft Pros: Richard Mitchell a seaman. 60 days for stealing potatoes. 30 days for stealing ???? (beans?) on TAS records. UK records show six times convicted of theft and 5 times imprisoned as disorderly. Found Catherine and all the siblings on the IGI for Prestonpans. Parents Thomas Porteous and Jean Balleny were married on 16 Oct 1820, Jean's father's name was Robert Balleny - no name given for father of groom. Births: Thomas DOB 28 Aug 1821 baptised 16 Sep 1821 Robert DOB 31 Dec 1822 baptised 19 Jan 1823 Jane (Jean) DOB 24 Jun 1826 baptised 23 Jul 1826 Catherine DOB 4 Dec 1828 baptised 18 Dec 1828 Edward Copland ditto so he must be her twin brother Margaret (Margret) DOB 6 Aug 1831 no baptism date shown There are no other baptisms shown for these parents. I cannot find them on the 1841 census either.
