Family connections for Joseph (Preston) are: PRESTON Joseph (Preston) was born on 6 7 1803. He was living at Hampstead when tried for stealing w/1other, on 16 6 1820, ladies clothes from Melinda (Colebrook) at Old Bailey on 29 6 1820, sentenced to 7years, held probably at London or Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 28 12 1820 after a vooyage of 3.5months on ASIA. On 4 3 1822 he was employed on (Rosa)s road party. On 14 12 1822 he was servant to Archibald (Bell) Jr, shepherding sheep across Blue Mountains to Bathurst. He was issued his Certificate of Freedom 27/0585 on 7 7 1827. He married as an emancipist Hannah/Ann (O'Donnell/O'Donald age14) on 19 1 1829 with consent of her parents at St Thomas CofE/Wesleyan Sackville Reach McDonald River. He was recorded in 1841 at McDonald River Wollombi. He died on 1 8 1863 at McDonald River Hawkesbury age60 & was buried at Old River cemetery St Albans. [Some details taken from this Website] Hannah/Ann (O'Donnell/O'Donald) was born on 8 1 1815 at Portland Head & baptised on 19 2 1815 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She is recorded in 1814 with her parents. After stepfather Thomas (Johnston) died her mother lived with her. She died on 13 6 1885 age70 at St Albans McDonald River Hawkesbury & was buried at Old River cemetery St Albans. Tried and convicted at the Old Bailey on 28th June 1820 for the theft of one slip, one spencer, and one skirt, the goods of Melinda Colebrook, Spinster, he was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Left England on 3rd September 1820. Ship:- the 'Asia I' sailed with 190 male convicts on board of which 1 died during the voyage. Arrived on 28th December 1820. Married Hannah O'Donnell (daughter of convicts John O'Donnell, 'Admiral Gambier' 1808 & Ann Beer, 'Britannia' 1798) on 19th January 1829 at Sackville Reach, they had 12 children between 1831-1859. Received his Certificate of Freedom (27/0585) on 7th July 1827. Joseph died on 1st August 1863 at MacDonald River, Hawkesbury, New South Wales. Hannah died on 13th June 1885 also at MacDonald River, Hawkesbury, New South Wales. Old Bailey Trial Transcription. Reference Number: t18200628-160 881. WILLIAM JONES and JOSEPH PRESTON were indicted for stealing, on the 16th of June , one slip, value 10 s.; one spencer, value 1 l., and one skirt, value 1 l. , the goods of Melinda Colebrook , Spinster . CHARLES SMITH . I am thirteen years old. I live in Cow-yard, Hampstead, and work for Miss Colebrook. About eleven o'clock in the morning of Friday, the 16th of June, I saw the prisoners in her field, where some linen was hanging to dry - there is a high gate with spikes to it. I saw them take these things off the lines, and go across the fields with them. I went into the kitchen and told the servants - they were taken on the Tuesday following. The linen has not been found. I am sure they are the boys; Preston took the things, and Jones stood by him. ANN THUMWOOD . I am servant to Miss Melinda Cole-brook . Smith said two boys had taken the linen; I looked, and missed it. The prisoners lived at Hampstead. JAMES ANTOBUS . I am a labourer. I heard of the robbery about three minutes after it happened. I was close to the terrace, and caught sight of the prisoners coming over the pales. I knew them before, but could not follow them then, being ill. I do not know which of them had the things. JONES. Q. Did I not offer to give myself up to you afterwards - A. Yes. JOHN EDWARD WILSON . I am a constable. I apprehended the prisoners on the 20th of June, at Hampstead. Smith, charged Jones with being one of them - he said he was ready to go to the prosecutrix. I saw Preston, and secured him. JONES'S Defence. I was in Oxford-street at the time of the robbery, and then went to Deptford. I met a butcher, he told me what I was charged with, and I said I would give myself up. PRESTON'S Defence. I heard the constable wanted me, I went and waited in the road for him to come by and take me. JONES - GUILTY . Aged 17. PRESTON - GUILTY . Aged 17. Transported for Seven Years .

Joseph was 17 years old when indicted, along with William Jones, also 17, for stealing 1 slip 10s., 1 spencer £1., 1 skirt £1., the goods of Melinda Colebrook, Spinster. 4/3/1822: On Rose's Road Party, on list of men selected for clearing Mr Marsden's estate. 14/12/1822: Servant of Archibald Bell Jnr. Permitted to proceed with sheep over the Blue Mountains to Bathurst. 7/7/1827: COF 1841 Census: at McDonald River Wollombi. 19/1/1829: Married Hannah O'Donnell at St Thomas's Sackville Reach, McDonald River. Hannah was born 8/1/1815 at Portland NSW and died 13/6/1885 at St Albans NSW. They had 11 children. 8/6/1865: Joseph died aged 60 at St Albans NSW.
