On Tuesday the assizes for this county ended here, at which eight prisoners received sentence of death, viz. Thomas Able, for stealing three gowns, a waistcoat, and two silver spoons, the property of John Sage, of ?; Thomas Moss, for stealing a tobacco box, containing one guinea and a half, four half crown pieces, and three shillings and sixpence in gold and silver; John Cable, for breaking and entering the dwelling-house of Silas Parsons, of Farley, and stealing divers articles; Sarah Varriner for stealing from Matthias Jennaway, Milford, seventeen guineas and a half, and some silver; Thomas Jones, for stealing two horses, near Bristol; Thomas Bailey, for assaulting John Rawlins, Cherril, on the highway, and robbing him of one guinea; and Ebenezer Downing and Henry Price, for breaking and entering the dwelling-house of William Pollen, at Chippenham, and stealing large quantity of goods. Jones and Bailey are left for execution; the rest remain under death until his majesty’s pleasure concerning them shall be known. Salisbury Journal, 16 Mar 1789
