Convict Notes
All the persons mentioned below were involved in the Canterbury Riots - Lead by William Courtenay who did the killing of a constable - the others followed. 9/6/1838 Northern Star and Leeds General Advertiser Yorkshire, England: FATAL RIOT NEAR CANTERBURY The Jury then returned a verdict of "Wilful murder against William Courtenay, otherwise John Tom (dead), William Burford (dead), William Price, Thomas Mears, otherwise Tyler, cousin of the deceased (wounded), Alexander Foad (wounded), and William Nutting". The accused were then committed to Maidstone Gaol. Thomas Mears was also on board the Pyramus - no ships for Foad and Nutting. William Price was a Labourer, 35 years old, 5'9" tall, sallow complexion, brown hair, reddish whiskers, hazel eyes. 4/4/1844: TOL 22/5/1846: CP
William left behind a wife Mary (nee Terry) a son George and a daughter 'on-the-way' - Mary. He was convicted of murder in a peasants revolt in Bossenden wood, Kent, that was broken up eventually by the army. Three men died. William did not actually kill anybody, but he was present at the gathering in the wood. Being there was good enough to secure a transportation sentance.
