The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

His Lordship was pleased reprieve the whole of the prisoners capitally convicted, with the exception of Priest and Mary Mazagora, before he left town. Staffordshire Advertiser, 15 April 1815.

The following is a list of the prisoners tried, and the several sentences passed upon them:— … E. Priest, for stealing sheep, the property of J. and T. Ludlow, of this town; … were severally found guilty, and sentence of death passed Aris’s Birmingham Gazette, 10 April 1815.

Elizabeth Priest, age 29, B.C. and their children, Ann Susan, 12, Mary Ann, 10, Emeline, 8; Edward Wm. 6; Susan 4; Sarah, 4; Etheline, 3; James, 1 week. Edward Priest had 1 horse and 100 cattle.

Edward married Elizabeth (Flanagan/Chapman)) at St Phillips Sydney in 1817 & produced 12 children. Edward and Elizabeth (Flanagan/Chapman)s children (10of) were: 1.Ann Susannah (Priest) born & baptised St Philips Sydney in 1817. 2.Mary Ann Sophia (Priest) born & baptised St Philips Sydney in 1819. 3.Emmeline (Priest) born in 1821, baptised age7months Christ Church Newcastle in 1822. 4.Edward William (Priest) born in 1824, baptised age7months Christ Church Newcastle in 1825.
