Thomas Johnston and William Pringle, accused of forcing, on the 5th of February, in the house of Mr Taylor, Blackfriars' Wynd, a chest of drawers, and stealing a hat and other articles of wearing apparel; and of stealing from a press in the house of Mr Brown, publican, Gallowgate, on the 6th of February a vest; with the additional aggravation against Pringle, of being habit and repute a thief, pleaded Not Guilty. Pringle had been twice in Bridewell for theft. Mr Drummond informed the Jury, that the charge against was restricted to an arbitrary punishment. the, Jury found Johnston Guilty, of the thefts libelled; but found the aggravation of opening opening lockfast places Not Proved. found that he is habit and repute a thief. Johnston was sentenced to fourteen years. transportation, and Pringle to be hanged on the 28th of next month.
