Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

Eliza Purcell about 3 years & six months put upon the sick list on 15 May and discharged into the hospital on Surgeons Notes; Pale and sickly in appearance with thick livid lips, altogether of a strumous habit of body although always in the enjoyment of very tolerable health, first complained 18 March of Diarrhea of 3 days duration and Prolapse to which she had been subject for at least 2 years No; 366. Trial; 3 August 1847. Cork Co. Trade; Housemaid, Height; 5 ft 2 1/2 inches aged 30 years old, Brown hair and grey eyes Offence; Arson - Burning a House the property of the father of her child, Did it to become he refused to support my child.
