James and his family lived in the Parish of Birlingham (not Birmingham) which is in Worcestershire (near Pershore and Worcester). The official records often mistranscribe their geographical origins as Birmingham (which was not in Worcestershire)




James Quarrell was listed as 19 years old on arrival, born in Gloucester and brought up at Birmingham - he was transported for 'housebreaking and stealing £5.14.0 pounds and some beef' - the prosecutor was his Grandfather, James Quarrell of Birmingham. James was 5' 5 1/2" tall, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, rather large nose, scar on forefinger on left hand, Inoculation mark on right ar, freckled on right arm above the elbow, 2 moles on neck, 4 moles back of the neck. Nov. 1849: TOL 8/3/1853: TOL 6/1/1854: Free Certificate. 28/2/1855: Permission to marry Caroline Hampton (Anna Maria 1852). 27/3/1855 - marriage at St. George's Church of England, registered at Hobart - he was 28 and she was 25. The had 5 children, 2 dying in infancy - 3 survived into adulthood. James Alfred became a farmer in the Sorrell area, as did his surviving sons. 25/7/1902: James died at Nugent, Tasmania. In his will he left everything to Caroline and she died in 1918.
