CONVICTS. The following Convicts left our County and City Gaols, on Monday morning, under charge of of the respective Governors and a detachment of the 82th regiment, on their way to the hulk, S Surprise, at Cove. From the City.—Peter Molloy, for manslaughter ; William Quinlan, for sheep-stealing ; ... Kilkenny Moderator, 10 Aug 1836.


William Quinlan was sentenced at Kilkenny Assizes in July 1836 to 7 years' transportation for sheep stealing, arriving on convict ship "St Vincent" in January 1837. Quinlan was single, 20 yrs old and a labourer who was a native of Kilkenny County. Report of his trial: Freeman's Journal, 19/7/1836 "Kilkenny Assizes - William Quinlan was placed at the bar charged with stealing a sheep, the property of Martin Brennan at Bawnmore, on the 12th April last (1836). The prisoner pleaded guilty, but subsequently withdrew that plea, and said he'd go to trial. The jury found a verdict of guilty. The prisoner said he was drunk when he took the sheep, but acknowledged that he was sober when he sold it. He was sentenced to transportation."
