Thomas was born in London, the son of Thomas and Mary Ransom. 8/6/1778: Married Elizabeth Durrell at St Leonards, Shoreditch; Elizabeth died in 1836. Thomas arrived on the Salamander in August 1791 and was transferred to Norfolk Island in September 1791 where he was employed on the repair of boats. Sept. 1810: Received a Full Pardon. At Hobart Town he was appointed superintendent of boatbuilders. C1817: Built the Joiners' Arms in Murray Street, Hobart Town. C1825: Moved to Green :Ponds swhere he had been granted 400 acres by Gov. Lachlan Macquarie in 1817. Built the Royal Oak Inn. July 1828: granted and additional 600 acres. 6/2/1829: Thomas died at his inn and was buried at Green Ponds. His property was bequeathed to his friend, Catherine Christiana McNally, who married Frederick von Stieglitz on 22 January 1830 and died in 1857 at Killymoon.




On 8th May 1819 Thomas Ransom attended the inaugural meeting of the Hobart Auxiliary of the British & Foreign Bible Society. In support of this organisation he made a donation of Two guineas and paid his first Annual Subscription of One guinea.
