William Read was born about 1818 in Poorstock Dorset, baptised in 1818. His parent were John and Sarah Read. William was from a large family having many brothers and sisters. He married Caroline in 1842 and they had a child Mary in December 1842. He committed a robbery with Bartholomew Gale on a dwelling house at Corsecomb, belonging to a George Lane. Both sent to 14 years transportation. Gale on the Eden and Read in the Hashemy. William spend time at Dorset, Millbank, Wakefield and Portman prisons before leaving in July 1859 aboard the Hashemy. William read arrived in Fremantle in October 1850, got his ticket of leave February 1851, and conditional pardon approximately January 1854. He married Sarrah Sherry in September 1866 at Yanganooka near Northampton 1866. William became a landowner and miner. Owning Yiapa mine. He died at his Farm Yiapa in June 1883. Leaving his wife of 17 years and their 6 children. As well as his family, first wife and child back in the UK. His executors were James Ridley and William Hepburn Gale who were also guardians of his young children. The oldest only being 16 and not of age u til 21.




20/3/1847 Sherborne Mercury Dorset, England: PROVINCIAL NEWS Bartholomew Gale and William Reid were indicted for entering the dwelling-house of George Lane, Corscombe, and stealing money. They stole one pound and ten-pence farthing. Bartholomew Gale arrived per 'Eden 1849' to Victoria. William was 33 years old when convicted, on arrival he was described as: Married with 1 child, 5'7¾" tall, brown hair, grey eyes, fround face, sallow complexion, stout build, scar on back of right hand. 10/2/1851: TOL Jan. 1854: CP
