It would appear that William had a short term relationship with Margaret Duggan (Convict, Experiment, 1804). This resulted in the birth of son William, born August 1806. The relationship did not last and Margaret married John Tarlington (Convict, Matilda, 1791) in December 1811. The child, William was known as William Duggan Tarlington all his life.

William's surname is quite difficult to trace. He is listed as Reddin (Reffian) on the indents for 'Perseus' when he was transported. However several other variations of the surname are entered in records. He was tried at the Hereford Assizes, 8th August 1800 and convicted of stealing a mare, he was sentenced to transportation for Life. Horses do seem to feature greatly in his life (especially the ownership of them). 1806 Muster: page 90 Ref A3760; William Refen, Perseus, prisoner with Mr McArthur at Parramatta. 1811 Muster: Page 106 Ref 4887; William Refean, Perseus, tried Aug 1800, Hereford, Life. 1814 Muster: Page 64 Ref 2826 William Refain, Perseus, On Stores. In Gaol. Then on 23rd November he was transferred to Newcastle on 'Estramina'. However, He was back again soon after, travelling on 'Lady Nelson' in late 1815. On 12th June 1822, at Parramatta he was convicted of horse stealing and ordered to serve the rest of his sentence at Port Macquarie. However, he was then given leave only 12 months later, to return to Sydney. No record located in 1828 Census.
