POLICE REPORTS SYDNEY. Friday, Nov. 24 Wm. Riley, a black-man, free, was charged with committing a violent assault on Thomas Reynolds, the coachman of Judge Stephens. Deponent stated that he found the prisoner on Saturday night last inside his master's gate, on which he ordered him out; that prisoner then struck deponent, which caused him to take a stick to defend himself while he proceeded to get a Constable; that prisoner threw a stone at him which struck him on the forehead and felled him to the earth that when prisoner saw deponent fall he ran to him and kicked him, and then proceeded to punch him unmercifully ; that this morning he threatened deponent, and said he was sorry he had not taken his life. This last circumstance was corroborated by the oath of W. G, Jones. Tlie prisoner stated in his defence, that he had received a blow with part of a paling across the loins, in consequence of which he had been obliged to wear a truss. Upon this declaration he was examined by the constables, who saw no mark whatever on him. Committed for the assault.
