Tasmanian Conduct Record: https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/CON31-1-34/CON31-1-34P352 No 377. Peter Rice, Per Phoenix, Tried 22 Sept 1823, Life. See record for details. SC. 22 Dec 1826. Death. ------------------------------------------------------------- FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22. Peter Rice and Laurence Pidgeon, the first for maliciously shooting at John Swift, in Murray-street, in October last, With a loaded pistol, and the latter for being present, aiding, assisting mid abetting. Peter Rice-Guilty. Laurence Pidgeon-Not Guilty. Hobart Town Gazette, 23 Dec 1826. The case of Peter Rice, for shooting at John Swift, was the first instance of a conviction in the Colony under what is termed the Black Act, and the same caution was repeated to him as to the others, to make up his mind to suffer. The time which the prisoners had been confined in Gaol, it was to be hoped, had been spent to good purpose ; if it had been so spent, they were then earnestly entreated to make the best use of what remained to them, and to prepare to meet their end. The awful sentence of Death was then passed upon the following thirteen, viz. :— Sydney Gazette, 25 Jan 1827.
