Convict Notes
At Bury Sessions, held the Guildhall, on Thursday and Friday last, before William Frere, Esq. Recorder, and the Town Magistrates, Richard Elliott, otherwise Fletcher, (aged 15), and James Smith (aged 14), were capitally convicted of a burglary in the workhouse that town, and received sentence of Death; but the learned Recorder, passing sentence, intimated that he should report the cases to the Secretary of State, and that he hoped pardon would be granted them on account of their youth. Norfolk Chronicle, 11 Jan 1817. -------------------------------------------------- Thursday se’nnight, when ... and Richard Elliott, alias Fletcher, for stealing a great coat, a pair of pantaloons, and a waistcoat, the property of Robert Gudgeon, of Bury, were each sentenced to be transported for 7 years. Norfolk Chronicle, 4 April 1818. ------------------------------------------------------ The following seven male convicts were removed from our Gaol, to be put on board the hulks at Portsmouth: — John Smith, alias Suttle, John Downing, Mingay Rampling, and James Ely, to be transported for life; and Captain Thomas Brown, alias Bowen, Orbell Scarrow, and Richard Elliott, for 7 years.
