As the plant collector on Major Thomas Mitchell's 1836 expedition he wrongly identified a plant as a violet, when it was in fact a member of the lily family. This led to the naming of the North East Vic. town of Violet Town. The plant in question was Thysanotus tuberosus the fringed lily.
