ADM 101/27/41828-1829 Medical journal of the Ferguson, convict ship, for 23 September 1828 to 8 April 1829 by Charles Cameron, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in carrying convicts to New South Wales. [Daily records of the ship's position, temperature readings and routine on board ship are also recorded]. (Described at item level). Folio 28: 30 January 1829; a prisoner Hugh Ritchie who was under treatment in his berth was attacked with asthmatic symptoms, fever and headache. Folios 29-41: Hugh Ritchie, aged 60, prisoner; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, s [scorbutic] catarrh, ill for several days and taking medicines in his berth for scorbutic symptoms, has been subject to asthma yesterday morning; put on sick list 31 January 1829, discharged 18 March 1829. Folio 31: 9 February 1829; in the evening Hugh Ritchie pulse had fallen to 78 and soft, skin was cool and soft but he looks very pale, he complains of a great sense of weakness which is increasing and had three stools in 24 hours. Folio 42: 26 March 1829; fresh beef and vegetables being daily supplied to the prisoners, improve the general health of the scorbutic patients rapidly. The prisoners being about to land, I this day sent (March 29th ), Thomas Ivory and Christopher Boylen, to the hospital and the following four persons as convalescents, still too weak to be assigned as servants to settlers, namely John Ryan, Hugh Ritchie, Patrick Quin, and John Clarke.
