HAMILTON: this vessel has brought 6 male prisoners from India, destined for Port Jackson; to which place it is expected she will sail to-morrow. Hobart Town Gazette, 24 May 1817. Ship News. On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. Sydney Gazette, Sat 7 Jun 1817. -------------------------------------------------- Convicts who sailed on the 'Mary' direct from Ireland - 1819 & 1836 - are currently being listed, incomplete data to date.

Family connections for Mary (Ridgley) are: RIDGLEY Mary (Ridgely/ey) was born about 1811 in Shropshire & became a servant of all work. She was tried for robbery of money of her master at Shropshire Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 7 9 1835 after a voyage of 5months on MARY; she was Catholic 5'1" dark ruddy complexion brown hair grey eyes. She married firstly James (Franklin) on 17 1 1837.>>> [Some details taken from this Website) James (Franklin) arrived in Australia free. Mary Ann (Ridgely/ey) & James (Franklin) produced perhaps 1child: 1.James (Franklin) was born on 17 3 1839 & baptised on 14 4 1839. He died on 4 5 1839 age5w at Female Factory. .. >>>Mary (Ridgely/ey) married secondly Thomas John/John Thomas (Allsopp) his first marriage) on 21 12 1840 at Cooks River & produced 2children. She produced perhaps 3children in her lifetime. This Website advises she died on 22 5 1839 age28/30 shortly after the death of her son; however Ref:'Hill End...' advises she died in 1854 age about43 at Sydney. Thomas John/John Thomas (Allsopp) was born about 1815 in Nottinghamshire & became a slaters boy. He was tried for stealing shoes of Robert (Lownds) at Nottingham Town Quarter Sessions Nottinghamshire, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 18 12 1833 after a voyage of 4months on LLOYDS. He was recorded in 1837 working for Thomas (Rose) at Mt Gilead. He then worked for J (Henderson) at Cooks River. He absconded from J (Henderson) on 28 2 1838, was captured on 10 10 1838 & escaped again on 13 2 1839, to be recaptured on the same day. He was issued his Certificate of Freedom on 24 4 1840. He changed his name to George (Barker) to escape his earlier life & had a second relationship with Jane Adelaide (Keating) in 1843. He lived in Ashfield area until 1860, then moved to Bathurst Sofala Orange, & became a tinplate worker on the goldfields. He died on 22 9 1891 age76, father of 10children, from bronchitis at Sydney hospital & was buried at Rookwood Necropolis general cemetery Haslems Creek Sydney.
