Old Bailey: MATTHEW RIELY, Deception > forgery, 4th December 1828. Reference Number: t18281204-120 Offence: Deception > forgery Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Death MATTHEW RIELY was indicted for that he, on the 16th of October , at St. Mary-le-Bow, feloniously did falsely make, forge, and counterfeit a certain order for payment of money, which said false, forged, and counterfeited order, for payment of money , was then and there as follows:- Threadneedle-street, (62,) London, 15 October, 1828. Messrs. Grote, Prescott, Grote, and Prescott, pay Stamp Office, or Bearer, One Hundred and Eighty Pounds 10s. £180 10s. LANE and CROFT. with intent to defraud George Grote and others; against the Statute, &c. SECOND COUNT, for feloniously uttering and publishing as true, on the same day, at the same parish, a certain false, forged, and counterfeited order, for payment of money, well-knowing the said last mentioned false, forged, and counterfeited order, for payment of money, to be false, forged, and counterfeited, which said last mentioned false, forged, and counterfeited order, for payment of money, was then and there as follows:- Order set out as above, with intent to defraud the said George Grote and others; against the Statute. THIRD COUNT, like the second Count, only with intent to defraud Charles Lane and another; against the Statute, &c. FOURTH COUNT, like the second Count, only omitting the words in italics, and substituting the word is. FIFTH COUNT, like the third, with the like variation as in the last. SIXTH COUNT, the same as the fourth, only omitting the figure "6," in the number of the banking-house. SEVENTH COUNT, the same as the sixth, only stating his intent to be to defraud Charles Lane and another; against the Statute. Of uttering the cheque, knowing it to be forged GUILTY - DEATH . Aged 20. Matthew Riley was born in Dublin. He was 21 years old on arrival, 5’1” tall, black hair, dark hazel eyes, single. 1830: Assigned to Mr Hector. Worked as a clerk in the Colonial Secretary’s Office. 1832-35: Public Works. 17/9/1838: TOL 2/9/1839: Permission to marry Mary Williams (Atwick 1837) 10/10/1839: Married. They had 7 children between 1840-1853. Mary died 29/4/1867 15/3/1842: Colonial Times, Hobart: Matthew Riely, LAW WRITER & STATIONER, LORD'S BUILDINGS. DEEDS and Writings neatly and correctly engrossed and copied ; Memorials and Petitions to the Government prepared and forwarded with dispatch. Hours from 9 until 5 daily. March 11, 1842. Around 1855/6 Matthew started a movement to allow freed convicts to be allowed to return to their homelands. 24/11/1857 Sydney Morning Herald: LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY BUSINESS PROCEEDINGS THIS DAY. Mr. DARVALL to move-That the petition or Matthew Riely presented by him on the 10th instant, praying the House to address the Queen for the repeal of those Imperial and colonial laws which injuriously affect the personal liberty of Her Majesty's freed subjects, be printed.' 1858: Became insolvent. 20/1/1859: The Courier, Hobart: Death of Mr Matthew Riely. We understand that Mr. Matthew Riely, formerly of the WhiteHorse Tavern, died this morning under circumstances of a very painful character. 12/2/1859: The Hobart Town Dailey Mercury: January 20.—At Hobart Town, Mr. Matthew Riely, formerly of the White Horse, Liverpool-street aged 50 years.

Matthew was actually a Law Writer (read law clerk) but that option was not on the list.
