National Archives. HO 17/5/19 1836 Jan; 1838 Nov Prisoner name: John Evans, Thomas Reddy (Thomas Ready) and James Rigby. Prisoner age: Evans aged 10, Reddy aged 9 and Rigby aged 13. Court and date of trial: Chester Quarter Sessions [Cheshire], January 1836. Crime: Evans and Reddy sentenced for stealing apparel and Rigby for receiving it. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler's report: Evans bad, twice before convicted. Reddy bad, twice in gaol on charge of felony. Rigby bad, convicted before. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Patrick Ready and Cath Ready of Liverpool (Thomas Ready's parents) undersigned by 29 inhabitants of Liverpool on behalf of Thomas Ready. 48 inhabitants of Liverpool on behalf of James Rigby. Henry Potts (Clerk of the Peace at Chester). Grounds for clemency: The prisoners' youth; prison would be a more suitable punishment than transportation; Ready and Rigby were led astray by Evans and his sister.
