Mary Jane Brown was paid 5/ a week not a month …sorry for my error




Currently exploring Mary Owen who arrived as an assisted passenger to Sydney as a laundry servant. Coxswain Brown and wife went to Norfolk Island where he drowned. His wife returned to Hobart and was given 5/ a month for 3 months to help care for her two children. She however,Mary Jane, widow had a “mangle” so should be able to make a living.




While Miles Riley was on Norfolk Island he was not a bursar. He was a convict and a convict overseer. His wife Mary Jane Browne née Owen had been a farmer. It was not an alias

Transported Sep 6 1833 from Kilmainham gaol. Arrived Sydney 19/01/1834 Assigned to Rev Fulton "Carrow Rocks" Cowra NSW. Sep 19th 1840 transfer to Norfolk Island Bursar of Norfolk island school Aug 12 1844 Royal Conditional Pardon. 1874 Blacksmith, Salisbury South Australia via Melbourne and Goldfields. Buried West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide. Wife Mary Jane Browne (Owen) alias Farmer.




Miles Reilly/Riley (most records, especially in VDL are under Riley) was 22 years old when convicted of stealing 2 cows. His occupation was a "Stableman". 4/6/1840: Tried at Bathurst for Receiving Stolen Property - 10 years. 19/9/1840: Sent to Norfolk Island. 12/8/1844: RW - Royal Conditional Pardon. 27/9/1844: Arrived in VDL from Norfolk Island per Lady Franklin. Miles was now 32 years old, a blacksmith, 5'3 3/4" tall, sallow complexion, dark brown hair and eyes. March 1845: released from probation 8/3/1845: TOL 4/12/1849: CP. 1846: Married Mary Jane Browne (free), they had 4 children. 13/12/1851:The Courier, Hobart: TO LET, Blacksmith's and Wheelwright's shop, at present in the occupation of Miles Riley, and doing a first rate business at Sandy Bay. 4/2/1852: Received permission to hire 2 TOL holders from the "Rodney". 2/5/1853: Application for Publican's Licence for the Lucky Horse Shoe at Sandy Bay. 1855: Retiring from business and sell at auction, a substantial brick house, containing 11 apartments and a blacksmith and wheelwright's shop. The house sold for £800, blacksmith's shop for £200 and 12 allotments on the Sandy Bay Road (2 acres) £819. No date of death found.
