Benjamin RISBY and his brother Joseph, were charged with stealing sheep. Their shepherd Patrick Murphy was also sent with them from Sydney to Hobart, in 1822. Death sentence, commuted to Life Transportation. Per ship "Deveron". Benjamin - aged 21 yrs; farmer's labourer; 5'9". Place of Birth: Norfolk Island, Australia. (note: Norfolk Island was administered by VDL, so some records state that he was born Tasmania.) 2 Nov 1821: Absent. Notice for Police Constables. (ref. Sydney Gazette 3 Nov 1821) 19 June 1823: Abscond into woods. 100 lashes & hard labour for 6 months in irons. 17 July 1823: Abscond into woods. 100 lashes & hard labour for 6 months in irons. 25 Aug 1823: Neglect of duty. 25 lashes - remitted by Commandant. 1823: Escaping from Macquarie Harbour, where he had been sent. To return to Macquarie Harbour for the remainder of sentence. 19 May 1827: at Prisoner Barracks - drunk. 21 Aug 1833: Ticket of Leave granted. (ref. The Tasmanian 23 Aug 1833) 29 Oct 1836: Conditional Pardon approved no. 888 (not to return to Britain). Native of this Colony. (ref. Gov.
