John Ritson (alias Clark) was convicted at Cumberland on 11 March 1843 for burglary and stealing silver spoons. Life sentence. Previously convicted and transportation sentence of 15yrs but escaped from Appleby Gaol and recaptured. Transported to Australia per 'Maitland' arriving 8 Feb 1844. Ship Surgeon's Report: Good. 30 mths Probation Period. Assigned to Norfolk Island (off east coast of NSW). Transferred to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per 'Pestongee Bomangee' April 1847. Labourer' 5'10"; Protestant; read & write; dark complexion; dk brown hair; Hazel eyes. Native Place: Castle Carrock, Cumberland, England. 1848 a Constable at Oatlands, VDL. Charged on 17/7/48 drunk on duty. Again 22/2/1849. 14/3/1850, drinking in a public house at Oatlands. 1849: recorded for services at a fire at Impression Bay. Also recorded for praiseworthy conduct in helping capture 4 abscondees from Port Arthur penal settlement. Died, at Oatlands on 27/11/1850.
