Family connections for James (Roach) may be: ROACH James (Roach/Roche) was born about 1800 perhaps at Limerick Ireland & became a carpenter. He was tried as an Irish rebel, idle & disorderly in Rathkeale town at Limerick Ireland in 1822, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 8 11 1822 after a voyage of 4.5months on MANGLES. He was recorded in 1828 as a wheelwright for William (Lawson) at Prospect. He was issued his Certificate of Freedom on 3 4 1829; he was a carpenter 5'9.5" florid complexion sandy hair blue eyes. It may be he whom Permission was granted on 6 5 1829 for him to marry Mary (Donaghy); marriage not found & children were born to a defacto relationship. On 24 4 1830 he boarded the ISABELLA bound for Moreton Bay (Queensland). [Some details taken from this Website; where 2of the name are found-either could be the correct spouse here.] Mary (Donaghy) was born about 1797 perhaps in Donegal Ireland & became a dairymaid. She married & produced 2children-the father died before transportation. She was tried for stealing clothes at Antrim Ireland in 1826, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 4 2 1827 after a voyage of 4months on BROTHERS; she was Catholic. Permission was given for her to marry John (Hogan MANGLES 1822) on 18 9 1827; the marriage seems to not have taken place. She was issued her Certificate of Freedom on 22 11 1833. Noted a James (Roach) is recorded as born in 1839 to James (Roach) & Mary (???) & baptised in 1839 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He is recorded as dying on 9 4 1839 age3d at Kent St & buried at St Phillips CofE Sydney. & a Margaret (Roch) is recorded as born in 1840 to James (Roch) & Maria (???) & baptised in 1840 at St Michaels RC Bathurst/Kelso. James Roche was charged as an idle and disorderly person; he was arrested in the town of Rathkeale, by Thomas P. Yokes, Esq. who found powder in his pocket, as also one of Capt. Rock’s notices. He was instantly found guilty, and sent off for transportation. David Donovan, for being absent from his house on the Commons of Rathheale, Guilty. William Nix, for the like.— Guilty. Maurice Crosby and William Scully were acquitted. Saunders News-Letter, 9 Mar 1822. -------------------------------------------------- The following Prisoners were then ordered by the Court to be put forward for sentence :—James Roche, Michael Neill, Wm. Nix, John Hickey, and Thomas Driscoll. His Lordship then severally addressed the Prisoners, and, on concluding, said—“ I call upon the Magistrates to stand to their posts, and discharge their duty with firmness and vigour. His Lordship then said, Mr. Sheriff, have you the cars in readiness to take the prisoners forthwith to be transported? - I have, my Lord. The prisoners were then bolted; the streets were crowded; the windows of the different houses were full; the greatest demonstrations of sobbing, as if it were a funeral, were manifested by the populace. One of the prisoners took off his hat, and cheered the populace. There were twenty-four infantry and six cavalry in attendance; and the whole had the appearance of an execution.
