Robert LIDDLE was convicted at a Dublin Court Martial on 3 Nov 1840 for desertion from the Army. He had been absent 2 mths. Previous charge of drunkenness and desertion 4 mths & 6 mths. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Waverley' from Kingston, Ireland arriving Hobart 13 Sept 1841. Ship Surgeon's Report: "Prisoner's cook. Strongly recommended, excellent". Aged 22 yrs; 5'10" height; labourer (had been a soldier for 5 yrs 6 mths in the 99th Regiment); Protestant; fresh complexion; brown hair; blue eyes; tattoos. Native place of birth: Edinburgh, Scotland. Colony of VDL: Probation period 1 year. Station Gang: Flinders Bay, then Perth (Tas). Work assignments in the Colony. 1844: absconded. Sentence extended 1 yr. Several notes of misconduct. 3 Aug 1847: Ticket of Leave granted. 7 Dec 1849: Free Certificate. 12 May 1852: Charged with stealing money and wheat. Guilty. To be imprisonment in HM Gaol, Launceston for 2 yrs. Sent to Port Arthur Penal Settlement. 2 May 1853: at Port Arthur - disobedience of orders. 7 days solitary confinement. 6 July 1853: at Port Arthur - disobedience of orders and refusing to work. 14 days solitary confinement.
