Previous conviction:- 5/4/1844 Durham Chronicle, Durham, England: William Kirsop George Fraddell, and Robert Oxley charge with sheep stealing, at the parish of Chester-le-Street, the property of William Thirlaway - Committed to Durham Gaol. 2/8/1844 Durham Chronicle Durham, England: ROBERT OXLEY (27), charged with unlawfuly aiding, inciting, hiring, counselling, and commanding, on the 29th of January, certain other persons to set fire to two stacks of wheat, four stacks of oats, and one stack of maslin, the property of Ann Lockley, at Whickham. This case arose out of the transaction which came before the court on Friday, when Oxley was admitted to give evidence, but remanded to prison for prevaricating in his statements. Kersopp and Twaddell, who have been already convicted of setting fire to the stacks, were now called to give evidence, and they confirmed the statement of Toulson, as given in the former trial. Mr WILKINS defended the prisoner with great ingenuity, but he was found Guilty, and sentenced to be transported for life. No ships found for George Twaddell or William Kersopp. Robert Oxley was listed as 29 years old on arrival - his place of birth was Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Occupation: Chaine & Anchor Smith. Robert was 5'6¼" tall, fresh complexion, brown hair, light hazel eyes, scar on right side of mouth, can read and write, Married with 1 child. Sent to Norfolk Island for his period of Probation. 17/8/1848: Back in VDL 14/2/1854: TOL - Meritorious conduct. 20/4/1858: CP 16/8/1899: Robert died of Dropsy, aged 83, at Gordon, Tas. - Informant was Thomas Oxley, his son. No marriage or other children found for Robert - perhaps Thomas was his son from England..
