Edward Roberts was born 1823, as stated in his first conviction July 1847 at Newtown Quarter Sessions, for theft of a spade. 2 months hard labour. Second trial, for breaking into a warehouse and stealing flour, sentenced to 7 years transportation 'beyond the seas', since he had a prior conviction. Edward served time at Montgomery Gaol, then Millbank in London, Pentonville in London, then Prison Hulk 'York', then at Portsmouth until leaving on the 'Pyrenees' in 1853. Edward's father was Richard Roberts of 'The Gutter' near Llansantffraid, Montgomeryshire, 'a respectable small farmer' (UK prison records). Edward's year of birth was 1823, but at second conviction it was changed to 1825. In 1853 at transportation he was actually 30 years of age.
