Family connections for Philip (Roberts) are: ROBERTS Philip (Roberts) was born about 1766 & became a soldier 102nd Regiment Coldstream Guards. He was tried w/1other for highway robbery of Henry (Sharpe), on 2 11 1790, & stealing money at Old Bailey on 8 12 1790, sentenced to death reprieved to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 14 2 1792 after a voyage of 8.5months on PITT: much fever & attempts to escape from the ship resulted in deaths of convicts-of the 450convicts on board only 29 were alive at muster in May 1792 (or perhaps only this many could be mustered). He had land grant in 1792. In 1795 he was granted 50 acres at Red Bank. He e married Sarah (Gittens/Gettings her third? marriage) on 27 11 1799 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. After 1799 he adopted his stepdaughter Jane (Gittins). In 1803 he was granted 120acres at Mulgrave Place Hawkesbury. In 1806 he employed John (Dorrington WILLIAM AND ANN 1791), who became husband of his stepdaughter Jane. In 1825 he was a constable at Portland Head Windsor Hawkesbury. He is recorded in 1828 at Portland Head on 70acres with his wife. He died in 1849 age about85 at Lower Portland & was buried at St Johns CofE Wilberforce. [Some details taken from this Website] Sarah (Gittens/Gettings) was born about 1771. She arrived in NSW as a convict with a child on 9 7 1791 after a voyage of 6.5months on Fleet ship MARY ANNalso. She apparantly had a daughter. She married secondly? (2?of3) Charles (Martin) on 12 8 1792 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. She is recorded in 1828 at Portland Head with her husband. Sarah (Gettings) does not have an entry on this Website. 1.Jane (Gittons/Gettings) was born at sea on Fleet ship MARY ANN which arrived in NSW on 9 7 1791. After 1799 she was apparantly adopted by her stepfather Philip (Roberts). She had a relationship with John (Dorrington) & produced 8children. REFERENCE: Craig James Smee 'Births and Baptisms Marriages and Defacto Relationships Deaths and Burials New South Wales 1788-1830' ..a complete listing from church & other records in the early colony.

George Platt was on board the Pitt also. Both were soldiers in the Coldstream regiment. Colonial Secretary Papers: ROBERTS, Philip. Per "Pitt", 1792 1795 Jul 22; 1803 May 11: On list of all grants and leases of land registered in the Colonial Secretary's Office (Fiche 3267, 9/2731 p.54; Fiche 3268, 9/2731 p.130) 1809 Aug: Produce received from at the Hawkesbury Stores (Reel 6040; 9/2673 p.82) 1810 May 8: Juror at inquest on John Maloney held at Portland Head (Reel 6021; 4/1819 p.434) 1825 Jul 5: District Constable at Portland Head; formerly of 102nd Regiment. On return of constables in the town of Windsor and districts of Hawkesbury (Fiche 3302; 4/7419.1 p.18) 1825 Jan 6: District Constable at Portland Head. On list of constables doing duty at Windsor & the Districts of the Hawkesbury (Reel 6062; 4/1783 p.81a) 1825 Sep 26: Certifying to the correctness of the statement made in Stephen Tuckerman's memorial (Fiche 3159; 4/1844C No.815 p.1045) 1795: Granted 50 acres at the Red Bank on the south side of the creek leading to Parramatta, and in 1803 was granted 120 acres in the district of Mulgrave Place, Hawkesbury. 1799: Married Sarah Gittins (Mary Ann 1791) - Sarah was the widow of Charles Martin (Neptune 1791) who was murdered in 1797 aged 36. 1806 General Muster: A Landowner, employed John Dorrington (William and Ann 1791) who later became his adopted daughter Jane's husband. 1849: Philip died at Lower Portland, NSW and was buried at St Johns, Wilberforce, NSW.

Philip Roberts was tried at the old Bailey: PHILIP ROBERTS Old Bailey Trial: 8th December 1790 (www.oldbaileyonline.org) Reference Number: t17901208-35 Offence: Violent Theft > highway robbery Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Death The trial transcript is very very large, well over 15 pages! Well worth a read... Briefly, GEORGE PLATT and PHILIP ROBERTS were indicted for feloniously assaulting enry Sharpe , on the 2d of November last, on the King's highway, putting him in fear, and feloniously taking from his person, and against his will, one guinea, and ten shillings and sixpence, in monies numbered, his monies..... After numerous witness statements and a very long trial... the decision was GEORGE PLATT , PHILIP ROBERTS , GUILTY , Death . Tried by the second Middlesex Jury before Mr. RECORDER. One of the witnesses for the accused was also found guilty of perjury in the matter.
