Convict Notes
After sentencing, Thomas Roberts was taken to the floating prison hulk "Justicia" where he presumably stayed until Nov 13 1820 when the ship "Medway" left Portsmouth, Hampshire, England for Australia. On the 31 August 1827 at Hobart Town Tasmania, while still a convict Thomas was appointed as a Police Constable. However 2 years later on 16 June 1829 Thomas was caught "pulling down part of post and rail fence and using it for firewood" and received 25 lashes. He received a conditional pardon on 21 November 1836 and on 26 November 1836 put in an application to marry Jane Wilson, a free settler who arrived on the ship "Strathfieldsaye" in 1834. However he was forced to wait until 17 Sep 1838 to marry Jane in Launceston. On 5 November 1840 Thomas received his full pardon - 20 years after he was sentenced. On 17 Jun 1842 Thomas left Tasmania on the ship "Sir John Franklin" for Port Phillip, Victoria. His wife Jane also left Tasmania on the same day with their now 2 children but on a different ship, "Corsair" , also bound for Port Phillip. In 1846 they had another child, my 2 x great grandfather Abel, who was born in Melbourne. At sometime between 1850 and 1856 (based on children's places of birth)Thomas and Jane moved away from Melbourne to Ashby, which is now known as Geelong West, Victoria. Thomas died on 24 Jan 1863 at 26 Weller Street, Ashby aged 65 with Jane passing away a year later at the same address aged 49.
