1832: On arrival in VDL, he was 28, single, and listed as a shopman. He said he had been convicted for stealing plate. 1839: After various instances of absconding and other misdemeanours he was sentenced to hard labour in chains for two years and sent to Port Arthur (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON32-1-2$init=CON32-1-2p110).

1831: James Robertson, 27, a harness maker or saddler of no fixed abode, whose native place was Berwick on Tweed, was committed for trial for theft at various locations in Aberdeen. His alleged victims were: Janet Wilson, Cot-town of Ordens, Boyndie parish, Banff; and William Morrison, Fowlzie, Keelhill, King Edward parish, Aberdeen; and James Jaffray, King Street, Bridge of Don, Old Machar, Aberdeen (see National Records of Scotland, Reference AD14/31/82). 1831, 1 October: He was tried at the High Court in Aberdeen, found "guilty in terms of own confession" and sentenced to transportation for 14 years. He had a previous conviction for theft and had appeared before Aberdeen police court on 6 August 1831 (see National Records of Scotland, Reference JC26/1831/186). 1831, 20 October: James Robertson, 27, was admitted to the prison hulk Justitia at Woolwich and from there he was sent on 11 February 1832 for transportation (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
