GEORGE NEWMAN, Theft > animal theft, 21st February 1787. 272. GEORGE NEWMAN was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 17th day of February, one gelding, of a bay colour, price 10 l. 10 s. the property of William Mannington , Esq. The witnesses deposed the same as on the trial of John Robinson ; but this prisoner not being present at any part of the treaty for the horse, and Henry Belton (who gave evidence on the trial of Robinson) swearing, that this prisoner bought the horse of Robinson on the night it was lost, and was to give him nine pounds for it, and actually did give him six shillings earnest in his presence; the Court were of opinion, that there was no ground for putting the prisoner on his defence, and he was accordingly ACQUITTED .
