Gazette, 28 May 1834. Needham Robinson continued to be in the Police during the 1830's, and is mentioned in the local newspapers several times. A HAT.—On Friday, a man named David Evans was sent to the stocks for having been found drunk in the streets ; at this time he had no hat with him ; after coming out of durance vile, he visited the Police Office, and seeing a hat encircled with crape, upon a staff in the corner, he removed it, and stooping behind some persons in the office, tried how it would fit him. It proved to be rather large, but this appeared to be a matter of indifference, for he retained his hold of it, and appeared to be paying the most profound attention to the dicta of the Bench. This slight of hand had not however passed unnoticed by a gentleman, who was standing by, and information having been given, Evans was taken in charge, together with the hat, when he stoutly maintained that the hat was his own—he knew it by the crape. Shortly afterwards, however, it proved to be the property of a constable named Needham Robinson, who was always in the habit of placing his hat in the position it was found by Evans. The prisoner was remanded. Sydney Monitor, 28 Sept 1838. -------------------------------------------------- LIST OF PENSIONS. Payable in the Colony.
