James "Roddy" Rodway was 36 years old on arrival in VDL. He was married with 4 children. James stated on his conduct record: I used no violence and the Husband threatened her if she did not prosecute me he would kill her. Her name was Mary Anstie, wife of Bill Anstie. James was 5'7" tall, grey eyes and hair and a dark complexion.

During 1841 James was working for a W.E. Lawrence Esq of Launceston. By 1846 he had absconded from prison and was still missing in 1849
