COUNTY OF DOWN ASSIZES. WILFUL FIRE RAISING, &c This prosecution was carried on by the British and Irish United Fire Insurance Company, Dublin, against John Rogan and four of his sons, namely. Murtagh Rogan, Bernard Rogan, Peter Rogan, and Charles Rogan, who were all indicted capitally under the Statute of the 43d of the King, for wilfully and maliciously setting fire to the house of the Prisoner, John Rogan, at Ballyrea, near Newtownards, in this county, with intent to defraud the Insurance Company of a considerable sum of money insured thereon. Morning Post, 14 Aug 1817. ------------------------------------------------- It appeared that the prisoners had insured the premises for 1.5001. when the property was not worth 1001. and from the evidence no doubt remained of the house having been wilfully, set on fire. The Jury found John, the father, Murtagh, Peter, and Charles, the three sons, Guilty on the capital indictments, and Bernard Guilty on all the indictments for the conspiracies. The Judge then passed sentence of death on the four unhappy men and left them for execution. Johnson’s Sunday Monitor, 17 Aug 1817. ---------------------------------------------------- Downpatrick Gaol. —On Friday the 12th inst. about 10 o’clock at night, the gaoler having had some reason to suspect that the Rogans meditated an escape, proceeded to the cell of Bernard, Peter, and Charles Rogan, J. Cartwright, and F. McAlinden, all under sentence of transportation, where he found that considerable progress had been made by the convicts towards effecting their purpose, by raising the floor, and preparing a passage for themselves out of the cell. Public Ledger, 29 Sep 1817.
