1832: On arrival in VDL, Jonathan Roose was described as 32, a ploughman and single. He was said to belong to a gang of horse stealers, but his behaviour on the voyage was "good, with one exception [not explained]" (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-37$init=CON31-1-37p100). 1832: He was assigned to Major De Gilpan [or Gilpin] (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON27-1-5$init=CON27-1-5). 1840, 2 July: Granted a Ticket of Leave. 1843, 5 October: He received a Conditional Pardon No.773. 1848, 5 January: Jonathan Roose appears on the Census as living in Collins Street, Hobart (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CEN1-1-84-91). 1850, 26 December: Jonathan Roose, 50, a carrier, married Ann Western Sproson, 49, a widow, at St John's Church of England at New Town (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CEN1-1-84-91).


1831, 19 July: He was convicted at the Summer Assizes at Montgomery, Wales, for horse stealing along with John Farren and Henry Beastall/Bestall. All were sentenced to death, commuted to transportation for life (see England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892). 1831, 7 October: All three were admitted to the prison hulk Justitia, Woolwich, and from there were sent for transportation on 10 February to VDL per KS Forbes (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
