Convict Notes
Joseph ROOT was convicted at Wellington, New Zealand on 7 April 1843 for Burglary - breaking into Mr. Lyons store and stealing cloths & ribbons. Brother William Root and McCarthy also charged and transported. 10yr sentence. Escaped from Wellington Gaol & tied the Constables up. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Portenia' arriving 20 June 1843. Married man; aged 23yrs; 5'4"; ruddy complexion; lt brown hair; grey eyes; can read & write a little; Protestant. Native place - Whitechapel, London. Father - Joseph, at Butcher's Row. Brother - Samuel Sister - Sarah also went to New Zealand but left when she married the mate of a vessel and now in Manilla. Sister - Betsey Sister - Caroline Wife Anna and 2 children at Port Nicholson. Joseph & brother emigrated from England to New Zealand 2 & half years ago as steerage passengers on the 'Katherine Stewart Forbes'. Lived at same house. His sister reported him for keeping a 'disorderly' house, which he denied. 2 and half years Probation period. Impression Bay. 28 May 1850: Ticket of Leave 11 April 1853: Certificate of Freedom
