William ROOT was convicted at Wellington, New Zealand on 7 April 1843, along with his brother Joseph, for Burglary. 10 yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Portenia' arriving 20 June 1843. (The brothers both broke out of the gaol in Wellington.) Single man; aged 19yrs; groom & coachman; can read & write. Native place - Whitechapel, London. Father - Joseph, at Butcher’s Row. Brother - Samuel Sister - Sarah also went to New Zealand but left when she married the mate of a vessel and now in Manilla. Sister - Betsey Sister - Caroline Some of his family had been in New Zealand for 2 1/2 years, from England (steerage passenger on the Katherine Stewart Forbes). He was living with his brother. 2 & half years Probation Period. 31 July 1843: Taking a fellow prisoner's shirt - 3mths hard labour in chains. Other notes of misconduct. Ticket of Leave granted 13 Feb 1849. (A William Root left VDL in 1852, for Victoria.)
