Tried at the Old Bailey, 21 Feb 1828. 639. CHARLESÂ ROOTSEYÂ was indicted for stealing, on the 24th of December , 42 lbs. weight of tobacco, value 7l. , the goods of George Rogers , his master. GEORGE ROGERS. I am a tobacconist , and live in St. Giles's. The prisoner was in my employ; it was a part of his duty to deliver goods - he had 42 lbs. of tobacco, and 17 lbs. of snuff to deliver to customers at Kensington, and other places - he went away, and I heard no more of him for three weeks - on the day after Christmas, I received this letter, which is his writing: - "SIR, December 26th, 1827. I write this to inform you, that I met with a young man on Monday last, when I was going to deliver your goods; I had unfortunately drank rather too freely, and was not aware of the time being so late, I sat down to take rest and fell asleep; when I awoke, my bag was gone, and I did not like to return; but I hope you will forgive, GEORGEÂ ROOTSEY." JOHN MERIDITH . I am clerk to the prosecutor. I sent the prisoner out with several parcels, in a bag, to deliver to different persons. Prisoner's Defence. I got into a public-house, at Knights-bridge, and was afraid to return home. GUILTY Aged 17. Charles Rootsey, age 17, Larceny from Employer, Tried Middx, 21 Feb 1828, 14 years, To NSW 23 May 1828. -------- ADM 101/1/9. Medical Journal of the Albion, male convict ship from 9 May to 14 November, by Thomas Logan, surgeon and superintendent, Folios 2-3: 19 May 1828; twelve convicts were received from the hulk Ganymede, and sixty from the Justitia, they had all been examined previously to their coming on board the Albion. They all appeared to be healthy, were clean in their persons and dressed in a new suit of convict's clothes. Folio 3: case no 20; Charles Rootsey, convict, taken ill off the Nore; sick or hurt, catarrhus; Put on sick list 22 May 1828, date of discharge unknown.

The Convict Indentures state that Charles Rootsey was 17 years. He could read and write; religion Protestant; status single and a native of London, England. He was a carters boy. He was convicted of robbing master on 27 February 1828 at Middlesex Goal Delivery and sentenced to 14 years. He had no prior convictions. Physical attribute height 5 feet 4 1/2 inches; complexion dark ruddy; hair brown and eyes brown. Transport number 124 and Prison number 28/1969. Assigned to Carters Barracks Received ticket of leave on 6 April 1835 (ticket number 35/186). Allowed to remain in the District of Goulburn on recommendation of Inverary Bench dated 31 October and 30 November 1834. Received Certificate of Freedom on 7 March 1842 (number 42/353). States that his height was 5 feet 7 3/4 inches and complexion dark ruddy. He was a labourer. From the Church of England records, Queanbeyan she married Miss Bridget Fox on 19 May 1840. Rev. Edward Smith was the officiating minister.

Charles Rootsey was born in London. He married Bridget Fox in 1846 in Queanbeyan and they had 11 children. 1835: TOL 10/2/1842: TOL Passport - Bungonia 7/3/1842: COF He held Depasturing Licenses in 1843 and 1845 at Mt. Pleasant in the Maneroo (now Monaro ) district. He was also noted in the Index to Squatters and Graziers - Itineary of John Lambie, County of Murray and St. Vincent August 1843 to April 1844. He died in bombala aged 79 in 1884.
