James ROSS was convicted at Oatlands, Van Diemen's Land on 17 July 1845 for horse stealing. Life sentence. James stated he had come to Australia as a sailor on the 'Collingwood' in 1833. He also stated he had not been in prison before, however the Colonial Secretary records this may not be correct and he could have been transported before (?). 1845: aged 26yrs; single; sailor; 5'11"; Protestant; can read & write a little. Native place - Westminster, London. 4 yrs Probation period. Station Gang - Norfolk Island. Transferred back to Van Diemen's Land per the 'Lady Franklin' 5 July 1848. 26 May 1847: Stealing mutton meat. 9 mths hard labour. 29 May 1847: Absent. 36 lashes. Noted to be of weak intellect and ordered to serve the rest of his probation at the Cascades, Hobart. 7 April 1857: Ticket of Leave granted.
