Catherine ROWE was convicted at Co. Monoghan, Ireland on 5 March 1849, together with her father John, for stealing 10 fowls. No prior convictions. 7 yr transportation sentence each. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Australasia' arriving 29 Sept 1849. Noted as "quiet, good". Single woman; housemaid; aged 17yrs; fresh complexion, slightly freckled; dk brown hair; light Hazel eyes; 5'0 3/4" height; Roman Catholic. Native place: Co. Monaghan, Ireland (ref. Convict record) Father: John Mother: Catherine Brothers: John & Hugh Sisters: Ann & Mary Colony of VDL: Station - 'Anson' Hulk. Sent out to work services in Bothwell, Green Ponds, Brighton and Hobart. No records of any misconduct. 30 Nov 1852: Ticket of Leave granted. Application for permission to marry and marriage as above. Noted on her Conduct page that she married Wm Farrer. March 1857: Certificate of Freedom issued, at Westbury, Tasmania.

26 Nov 1853: Application for permission to marry - to William FARRER/FARRAR (transported per Maria Somes). ref. 52/1/6. 28 Dec 1853: Marriage. William FARRER, aged 29yrs, bachelor, a sawyer to Catherine ROWE, aged 21yrs, spinster at St. Matthias Church of England & Ireland at Windermere, nr Launceston. (ref. 37/1/12 no. 1071) Children: 22 April 1855 - Benjamin FARRER. Father - William FARRER, labourer. Mother - Catherine FARRER, formerly Clarke. (Note: the informant for this information was a friend, so must have recorded the mother’s maiden name incorrectly.) 14 June 1857: male child. Father - William FARRAR, a sawyer. Mother - Catherine FARRAR formerly ROWE. District of Launceston. (n.b. this surname is commonly spelt ‘FARRAR’ and there are several other convicts by that name.)
