Irish Convict Database, by Peter Mayberry. Anthony Ruane, alias Ruan, age on arrival, 60, per Blenheim I (1) 1834, Tried at Sligo, 1832, Life, for Maiming cow. White Boy Irish rebel. DOB, 1774, native place, Sligo Co. Married, 1 male, 8 female children, Trade: Labourer farm. Catholic. (Sligo) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday, October 27. Anthony Rooan, an elderly man, was indicted for maliciously stabbing, on 16th April last, a cow. the property of Patrick Boland, Patrick Boland sworn—Saw Rooan in my field on the morning of 16 th April last, with a knife stabbing cow, could plainly see him); he inflicted six wounds in her side, one stab was so deep that it penetrated to her entrails; did not near him from apprehension of his own life. The witness, on his cross examination by Mr. Baker, acknowledged having  lived on bad terms with prisoner: Jury brought in verdict of Guilty: Sligo Journal, 2 Nov 1832.

Indentures state that Anthony Ruane is aged 60 years old. He could read and write; Religion Roman Catholic. He was married and had 9 children - 1 son and 8 daughters. A native of county Sligo and a farm labourer. He was convicted of maiming a cow in County Sligo and was convicted for life in October 1832. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes are height 5 feet 5 1/2 inches; Complexion swarthy; hair is brown mixed with grey and grey eyes.
