Memorial (Fiche 3029; 4/1825A No.661 pp.547-8) 1820 Petition for certificate of freedom (Fiche 3203; 4/1861 p.6) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1820 Memorial. The humble Petition of John Ruby, Most Respectfully sheweth That your Petitioner was tried at Dorset in the year 1808 by a General Court Martial and received sentence of Transportation for 7 years and at the expiration of that term to serve as a soldier for life and arrived in this colony in the year 1811 Per Ship Admiral Gambier (2nd) Sendray Master. That your Petitioner at the expiration of the 7 years applied for a Certifciate of Freedom and your Excellency sent him to Colonel Molle but Your Petitioner was not willing to enter into the army. That your Excellency on that account was graciously pleased to grant him the indulgence of a Ticket of Leave bearing Date 10 Feb 1815. ever since your Petitioner trusts that his conduct has been such as to merit your Excellency’s approbation. Therefore your Petitioner most humbly prays your Excellency will be pleased to grant him a Certificate of Freedom and Petitioner as duty bound will ever pray Overwritten: Referred to the Secretary- If free by the Indents, the Bearer must receive Certificate . He is not to join any Regiment. (Signed ) L.M. 3 March 1820. The Facts being as ... receiving a Certificate No 17/2430 Date 6 Mar 1820 was delivered to John Rube agreably to His Excellency’s order hereon. (Initialled) -------------------------------------------------------------- marked at Top: 40 Acres. To: Governor Lachlan Macquarie. The humble Petition of John Ruby, (Free by Servitude) Most humbly sheweth That your Petitioner arrived in this Colony per Ship Admiral Gambier 2nd in the year 1811 and has resided nearly ever since his arrival in the District of Bringelly, and conducts himself honestly, soberly and diligently. Your Petitioner therefore now begs leave to address Your Excellency in humble hope you will take his case into your gracious consideration and give him a Grant of Land, and your Petitioner will settle on, and cultivate the same, as in Your Excellency’s wisdom may deem meet. And your Petitioner, as in duty bound will ever pray. Bringelly June 21 1820 I have known the Petitioner several years, as an honest, sober and industrious character, ….. to settle on a piece of ground.
