Gifford Russ, an old offender, was sentenced to 7 years transportation, for stealing a quantity of wheat and a sack, from a barn belonging to the Rev. Chas. Mayo at Beechingstoke; and to a further period of 7 years, for stealing a bucket, the property of Joseph Hayward at Beechingstoke. Russ’s brother was adduced as evidence against him. On being put into the witness box, he looked very sorrowfully at Gifford and said Ah! it’s a bad case, brother Gif! Ah! (said Gifford, equally sorrowful, in reply), thee’st done a hard job, brother Dick. Devizes Gazette, 18 Oct 1827
