Claims

"Mary is my 4G Grandmother. She married fellow convict Richard Tonks (Tunks) and they established the Jordan Inn (later called Jordan House) at Broadmarsh, around 1850. The house remained in the hands of descendants until the mid 1970s. In 2020, during a renovation, rare Rococo wallpaper and a drawing, were discovered behind a cupboard. They have been preserved and are thought to date back to when the house was built circa 1850. Parish records suggest Mary was born at Glasgow, Scotland, to John Russell and Mary Livingston, on 9 April 1813. The Livingston/e name carried down as middle names, for the children of Mary's two songs, Richard and Jeremiah (my 3G Grandfather)."

MERCURY HOBART - SAT AUG 09, 1890 On December 31st last the Jordan Inn passed out the last of the list of licensed houses, with an unblemished record of over 35 years. For sometime past it had been kept open more out of consideration for the public convenience than for the benefit of the family with whose name it was identified, as thrift and industry in agriculture had long since made them independent of trade. It was then felt that the effacement of the old familiar sign would soon be followed by the erection of another memorial tablet in At Augustine's Church Yard, and today the remains of Mrs Mary Tonks were laid beside those of her husband, in the presence of the largest concourse that has ever attended a burial at Broadmarsh. Her decease severs one of the few remaining links between the past and the present, but though she had outlived so many of her contemporaries, the gathering round her grave gave touching proof that age had not withered the esteem of those who had learned to appreciate her worth before the weight of years forced her into comparative retirement. Few outside her immediate family circle thought more of Mrs Tonks than the writer of these lines and his knowledge of her extends over half a long life time. Her kindly speech and gentle bearing, her large-hearted and unobtrusive charity, will surely keep her memory green. Her illness was long, and at the outset painful, but suffering decreased as the end approached, and she passed away peacefully. Since the death of her husband, 14 years ago, Mrs Tonks had never been separated from the family of her son Mr Jeremiah Tonks, for many years a member of the Brighton Municipal Council, and Chairman of the Broadmarsh Road Trust. Her other son, Mr.R Tonks lives in the Oatlands district. The Rev, J K Wilner performed the funeral service, and Mr Clark of Hobart conducted the interment. August 6.
