John was born in 1806 Father - Samuel russell 1770-1817 of Crewkerne Mother - Mary bowdon 1772 of QUeen Camel, Somerset He was the youngest of 4 George 1791 Richard 1798 Elizabeth 1800 died aged 9 weeks He left home in crewkerne aged 12 after his father had died and became errand boy for bakers in chard He married Jane LArcombe on 12 July 1829 in chard Their daughter Mary was baptised 30 sept 1929 Employed in the lace miill of mr Rick He was convicted for a murder committed on 30th Nov 1829 Pleaded innocence throughout Sentenced to be executed and dissected Sentenced was reprieved and commuted to transportation Kept in ilchester gaol Departed 5th march 1931 on ARGYLE to Tasmania Arrived 3rd Aug 1831 Hobart Tickets of leave for 12 years and 3 months then given 12 months probation

John RUSSELL was convicted at Somerset, England on 30 March 1830 for murder of a young woman who worked at the Lace Factory. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Argyle' arriving 5 Aug 1831. Married - wife in service, at Crookhorn (?),nr. Taunton. 1 child. Mother - Mary Brothers - Richard, George & Samuel (ref. Indent record) 1 Sister Native place of Birth: Crookhorn, Somerset, England. Aged 24 yrs. Conduct Record: Several notes of misconduct and punishments but obtained his Ticket of Leave and Conditional Pardon. 1835: Assigned to Rev. R. Davis, Hobart.
