John RUSSELL was convicted at Lancaster, England on 3 Nov 1834 for stealing a purse and money. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship "Layton" arriving 10 Dec 1835. Gaol Report, England: Had been convicted for minor offences previously. Hulk Report, England: Flogged on the Hulk, for laughing in Chapel. Indifferent. Single man; 18yrs of age; Roman Catholic. Native Place of birth: Liverpool, England Assigned to work services in the Colony of VDL. Several records of misconduct and punishments. 1837: further charge of stealing. Sentence extended by 3 yrs. 1838: Absconded. Sentence extended by 6 mths. 3mths hard labour, in chains. 36 lashes. 1841: Sent to Port Arthur Penal Settlement for 2 yrs. 7 Aug 1851: Aged 32yrs. Launceston Quarter Sessions Court, Tasmania - burglary, at Carrick. Life Sentence. 1 Sept 1851: Sent to Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales). 1856: Returned to Hobart, Tasmania. (Not to enter south of Oatlands) 9 Feb 1858: Ticket of Leave granted. 1860: Colonial Conditional Pardon approved.
