Barnaby Ryan was transported on the Waterloo, departing 21st May 1836 and arriving 6th Sep 1836 with 220 passengers.
1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

Convict Notes
His wife Elizabeth Newman followed him out to Australia with her mother Mary Ann Newman (nee Ryan) with two of her sons to Barnaby. Elizabeth set up a carter's business and was allowed to use her husband Barnaby as her convict labourer. He had permission to travel as far as Bathurst carting goods and timber. Elizabeth seemed to be the driving force behind the family and kept them all together. Barnaby, trying to leave his convict past behind him started using the name Bernard and that is how he was known to all subsequent generations.
