Mat. Ryan and John Dwyer pat to the bar, charged with assaulting the habitation of John Dwyer, with intent to oblige him to quit his habitation. John Dwyer swore that a man came to his house the I9th April. and threw the door off the hinges while he was asleep—three men came in, whom knew.. knew them before for they were neighbours. He identified the prisoners ...the prisoner, Mat Ryan struck him with a …. and stabbed him with sharp small instrument, like a sword. one man stood at the door, and another outside the door —they dragged him naked about the house, beating him all the time when they came they sipped off the clothes of witness and his wife, and struck her with a stone, and cut her so that she bled a good deal. On his cross examination said he was sent to jail 3 months for ...ling a person in the mouth. Constable Thomas Judge swore that apprehended the prisoner in still house, at Kilpatrick, concealed behind a barrel, when he took him the prisoner pretended to be asleep or drunk, and would not appear sensible until he was brought to river close at hand, where when feeling the water, immediately he became sensible, and was willing to; he at first said his name was M'Namara, but meeting on his way a girl who kissed him and called him by the name of Ryan; it was then that he admitted that his name was Mat Ryan, A person of the name of James Tate swore to an alibi but did not know where the prosecutor lived, and did not know, but by repute, the night the house was attacked, Pat Green swore to an alibi for Mat Maher on the 18th of April, and the attack took place on the next night. The jury without hesitation, returned a verdict of guilty against both. Clonmel Herald, 3 Nov 1832
