VDL: 26 May, 1853: On arrival in VDL, JOHN RYDE, convict #28003, was listed as a farm labourer; transported for 15 years for “robbery and assault”; 2nd conviction – 7 years for burglary, served 3 years 9 months at Woolwich (on the Justitia hulk, according to his Gibraltar record); 39 years old, 5’5¾” tall with dark brown hair, blue eyes and a sallow complexion. He was a widower [with one child], Protestant and literate. Native place: Hatfield, Lincolnshire [sic; note different place to that on his Gibraltar record]. He said he had been transported for “stealing from the person a watch and money” from the prosecutor Mr Brocklesbury at Caster (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON14-1-47$init=CON14-1-47_00196_L). Gibraltar report “very good” (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-115$init=CON33-1-115p159). Family: Brothers Curtis, John and Edward; sisters Sarah and Ann; son John – at his native place (http://foundersandsurvivors.org/pubsearch/convict/chain/ai61862). Proper name: THOMAS KELSEY, according to his Convict Indent (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON14-1-47$init=CON14-1-47_00196_L). This would also explain why his brother’s name was John (see above). --0--

TO GIBRALTAR: 30 January, 1848: RYDE, JOHN #1143, arrived on Gibraltar from Millbank prison, London, per Mount Stewart Elphinstone. He was held on the Europa hulk (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951; Misc.; Register of Prisoners; 1810-1822 [mislabelled]). On Gibraltar, JOHN RYDE was described as 32 years old when convicted, sentenced to 15 years for “robbery and assault”; previous conviction for felony; born in Hatfield, Yorkshire; Church of England; brown hair, light hazel eyes and a fair complexion, 5’5¾” tall; literate; labourer; single; relatives/family – living in Hatfield, Yorkshire (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951; Misc.; Register of Prisoners; 1810-1822 [mislabelled]). --0--

PREVIOUS CONVICTION: 12 April, 1842: At the Louth April Sessions, Lincolnshire, Thomas Kelsey, aged 28, and semi-literate, was tried, convicted and sentenced to transportation for 7 years for “stealing at Laceby about 14½ yards of silk for a gown, six gowns, eight yards of print, a large table cloth and divers other articles of wearing apparel, and one knife, the property of John Riley”. He had been committed to stand trial on 14 March by Magistrate Rev J Gedge (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951 for Thomas Kelsey, Lindsey Gaol, Calendar of Trials, 1831-1863). --00--
